It Finally Feels Like Summer

After a few months of wanting to be healthier and making some modest progress, I made a lot of progress today. I ran 3 miles on the treadmill at a much faster pace, including 7mph sprints, then did 20min of strength training. I want to try to run faster and do more run/strength combos.

Breakfast was a delicious bowl of cauliflower rice, black beans, tomatoes, guacamole, salsa and over easy eggs, eaten al fresco in the driveway because K wanted to play outside. I relented because kid + fresh air= happy disposition and also I can capitalize on the flexibility I have in the summer. I grit my teeth when people ask if I’m “done” with work or have the summer “off.” I try to smile and reiterate the flexibility.

I invested some time in exploring coding resources and pivoting from a tenure track job to one that leverages a PhD in an alternate way. I read about yet another college eliminating French. Both RU and college-level French teaching are sinking fast and I want to use my next year of employment to learn some new, marketable skills.

I started reading a 3rd book (4th if you count The Magician’s Nephew I’m reading with J), Women Talking but Miriam Toews. I’ll discuss it with some colleagues later. I’m test-driving Audible for this one. So far pretty easy. While listening I went for a long walk, another goal in being healthier, I stumbled upon this beauty.

Now on to Saisons sauvages by Kettly Mars, a Haitian novel a dear former student recommended.
The depiction of Duvalier’s totalitarian regime is hard to stomach because it has a number of parallels  to the current situation in the IS.

  1. This post has a mixture of so much goodness--kids and bfast al fresco, books, health, and simple pleasures. Awesome! I'm over the gritted smile on having the summer "off" and being "done" and think I'm going to end up telling off the next misguided soul who dares uses those trigger words with me. :-/ Thanks for sharing this lovely glimpse into your summer days!
